Atheist Alliance Decries Capitulation to Islamic Violence by Bobbie Kirkhart
Atheist Alliance International calls on all governments that claim to value freedom of expression to stand up to the bullying tactics of Islamic militants, who are wreaking havoc around the world in response to the printing, in privately-run periodicals, of editorial cartoons depicting Mohammed... [added 2.6.06]

Nigerian Humanist Movement Opposes Government Move to Ban Same-Sex Marriages by Leo Igwe
The Federal Executive Council approved a bill that prohibits same-sex marriages and relationships. The bill provides for a prison term of five years with no option of fine for anyone who contracts or has relationship with a person of the same sex... [added 1.28.06]

Atheist Alliance: Religion-Free and Proud of It
"We are the last of the social pariahs in the United States. Some dictionaries actually define us as synonymous with immorality, wickedness and sinfulness. We are proud to be religion-free."   [added 7.26.99]

Atheist United Booklist
Although atheist books and their authors are no longer burned, finding these books can sometimes be a real problem, since most major booksellers do not stock them. Here is a select list that covers a wide range of topics relating to atheism:   [added 03.25.03]

Christian Churches Versus The Lightning Rod by Al Seckel and John Edwards
It is well-known that the Catholic and Protestant churches opposed the scientific theories of Galileo and Copernicus, but did you know that they also opposed Benjamin Franklin's lightning rod?...   [added 03.25.03]

Columbine's Christian Martyrdom Never Happened by Howard Thompson
"The media slobbered all over Columbine high school student Cassie Bernall's faith in god... Cassie's faith in the face of death made her the newest Christian martyr... While Cassie's murder is a tragedy, there is a problem with her martyrdom -- it never happened. What really happened was exactly opposite, and it didn't happen to Cassie."   [added 11.29.99]

Debunking the Creche Display compiled by Jim Senyszyn
"nearly all the details of the nativity scenes which have inspired great artists, and delighted generations of churchgoers on Christmas Eve, stem neither from history nor from Scripture, but from folklore."   [added 12.06.99]

The Definition of a God by August Berkshire
There is often disagreement as to how a god should be described. I would define a god as "an independent, conscious, supernatural being, entity or force capable of interacting with the natural world."....   [updated 03.17.00]

Does Morality Require God? by John B. Hodges
[added 03.12.00]

Evolution Resources by August Berkshire
As a supplement to the Atheism on the Internet section, this is a much more in-depth look at a wide variety of resources available to people who want to learn more about, or need to refute the religionists' spin on the fact of evolution... as well as the theory...   [updated 03.24.03]

The Faith of Creationism by August Berkshire
"Creationists base their entire argument on trying to discredit evolution. Because there is no positive evidence for creationism, the typical creationist must have faith in the following eight things"...   [added 10.25.01]

The First Freethought Day by Dr. Tim Gorski
"With the jails overflowing and no end to the frenzy in sight, Cotton Mather delivered a sermon in which he argued against the mass convictions. This emboldened some of the other clergy to begin questioning the reliability of "spectral evidence." And with the public support he needed - the Governor was a politician, after all - William Phips issued an edict on October 12th, 1692 barring the admissibility of such evidence from the courts."   [added 11.29.99]

God Loves You by August Berkshire
A few reasons to doubt the existence of a loving god...   [added 8.24.99]

History's Verdict On Religion by Will Durant
Will Durant (1885-1982), one of the leading historians of the twentieth century, had some surprising and important things to say about religion...   [added 03.25.03]

How Can You Have Morals If You Don't Believe In God? by Clark Lind
" . . .as a rational, reasoning individual, I choose to be moral and ethical because it is the right thing to do, not because I have been commanded to be this way."   [added 8.6.99]

How Reason Made the Season by Howard Thompson
"But how did Christmas become the birthday of Jesus? A bit of history will help us understand."   [added 03.12.00]

How The Calender Got That Way by Lee Carter
In the days of the Roman Republic, the calendar was numbered from the founding of the city of Rome... this was a lunisolar calendar of only ten moons, or 'months" -- which totaled 355 days. So unless otherwise corrected, the months would have a tendency to rotate throughout the year and get completely out of sync with the seasons... Unfortunately, the insertion of these intercalendary days was left up to a committee of politicians, so it was rare for any two years to be exactly the same length. And specific days of the year bore only a tenuous relationship to solar time.   [added 03.25.03]

Ingersoll's Views on Religion by Dr. Gordon Stein and Al Seckel
Robert G. Ingersoll (1833-1899) was America's foremost orator and atheist. Many of his lectures were devoted to the hypocrisy in religious belief. Thought provoking lectures, such as "Some Mistakes of Moses", "The Gods", and "The Devil", caused great alarm among the clergy, who wasted no time in slandering and libeling Ingersoll. To this Ingersoll responded, "People who love their enemies should, at least, tell the truth about their friends. Should it turn out that I am the worst man in the whole world, the story of the flood will remain just as improbable as before, and the contradictions of the Pentateuch will still demand an explanation"...   [added 03.25.03]

Kosher Pigs and Jews for Jesus by Robert M. Price
Who are "Jews for Jesus"? Why are Jews for Jesus? How can there be Jews for Jesus? Isn't that kind of like "Christians for Muhammad"? "Capitalists for Marx"? According to most folks' dictionaries, such a group shouldn't exist. But it does...   [added 7.07.00]

Mommy, Where Do Stupid Beliefs Come From? by Scott McGlasson
In a recent online discussion, a question was posed which has, I'm sure, occurred to many atheists and freethinkers: "Why do religious people believe the things they do? How can a person go through life on 'faith,' in light of mountains of evidence that suggest otherwise?"...   [added 12.20.01]

The Problem of Evil by August Berkshire
Many people assume a god exists who is all-powerful and all-good. If this is true, why is there evil in the world? If this god is all-powerful, it must not be good enough to correct these evils. And if this god is all-good, it must not be powerful enough to correct these evils...   [added 8.24.99]

Why Outreach? by Sandy Feroe
"Surely then, the rest of us can end our silent acquiesence. All we have to do is take that first small step, and reach out . . ."   [added 7.26.99]

Why We Need Strong Atheist Organizations
If you're ever in need of a jolt, a quick blast of anger or a flash of indignation, remind yourself what Christian America is really like...   [added 7.26.99]

The Winter Solstice & Christmas by August Berkshire
The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, when the sun reaches its lowest point on the horizon. ("Solstice" literally means "sun stop.") In ancient times, pagans celebrated this day as a "rebirth" of the sun or a sun god, and the beginning of a new year....   [added 8.24.99]

ELECTRONIC PAMPHLETS: BY STEVEN MORRIS, PHD. back to top
Abortion: Why The Religious Right Is Wrong by Steven Morris, PhD.
Anti-abortionists are patiently chipping away at the right that women now possess to choose whether or not to have an abortion, enshrined in law by the Roe vs. Wade decision of 1973. Arbitrary waiting periods, harassment, unjust financial burdens and the murder of doctors by 'pro-life' assassins, are considered by many right-wing Christians to be the moral approach to forcing their opinions on everyone else. We may yet return to the 'good old days' of back-alley abortions, and their harvest of abandoned women, mutilated or dead...   [added 03.25.03]

Christian Censorship by Steven Morris, PhD.
Americans too often take for granted the freedom that they have, to say what they please and read what they want. It is easy to forget that such freedom was forbidden throughout most of human history, and its presence in America today is one of the greatest gifts the Founding Fathers of this country gave to us. "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press" according to the First Amendment to the Constitution, and this remains a basic foundation of our democracy...   [added 03.25.03]

The Christian Hatred of Women by Steven Morris, PhD.
Civilization has slowly advanced towards the equal treatment of women, but it is the nature of all religions to look backwards to an earlier time, when their gods... allegedly walked the Earth, and told the men that they were better than women... Sadly, the commands that include misogyny are enthusiastically obeyed...   [added 03.25.03]

Christianity and the Nazis by Steven Morris, PhD.
How was it possible for the people of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms to turn to the leadership of Hitler, Himmler and Hess? ... Hitler's Germany, allied with Mussolini's Italy, was responsible for the worst war of the twentieth century... World War II not only killed millions in conventional warfare, it also gave rise to a horror that remains unique in modern history: The Holocaust. Approximately six million Jews were put to death simply for being Jewish...   [added 03.25.03]

How The Anti-abortionists Will Be Defeated by Steven Morris, PhD.
The anti-abortionists will fail. Unless they can destroy civilization and return us to the Dark Ages, women will never abandon their right to choose whether they or some collar-backward cheerleaders will determine if women can have abortions... To speed the inevitable defeat of the anti-abortionists, we must expose the unreality of their claims, and the hypocrisy of their beliefs. If we cannot convince those who prefer faith to knowledge, we may shame them into silence.   [added 03.25.03]

The Founding Fathers Were Not Christians! by Steven Morris, PhD.
The Christian Right is trying to re-write the history of the United States, as part of their campaign to force their religion on others who ask merely to be left alone. According this Orwellian revision, the Founding Fathers of this country were pious Christians who wanted the United States to be a Christian nation, with laws that favored Christians and Christianity... Not true! The early presidents and patriots were generally deists or Unitarians, believing in some form of impersonal Providence but rejecting the divinity of Jesus and the absurdities of the Old and New Testaments.   [added 03.25.03]

Science and Religion by Steven Morris, PhD.
The Bible stories (and religions in general) are a mishmash of history, morality, theology and claims about the world of nature. Time and distance have made the historical claims irrelevant... The theology is curiously untestable; miracles, we are told, were everyday occurrences thousands of years ago, and lots of miracles are promised in the indefinite future, but are we allowed to study such supernatural events, they remain mere myth and hearsay...   [added 03.25.03]

The Threat of Creationism by Steven Morris, PhD.
If America is to prosper, it will need its citizens to be well-trained in science. Unfortunately, there is a growing threat to science teaching in the United States. Fundamentalist Christians are trying to force teachers to teach Bible stories as science in the public schools. Even though there is no scientific basis for Creationism..., Christian pressure groups have successfully influenced school boards across the nation, preventing the spread of scientific knowledge in public schools.   [added 03.25.03]

The Catholic Church is soaked in sexual imagery: Catholic schools are named after the Holy Conception, Mary is never without her virginal moniker, everyone's on their knees, wine flows freely, and Jesus Christ is tongued and swallowed on a weekly basis."...   [Nerve.com, April 26, 2002]

Zealotry and the Bloody Road
An unimaginably heartbreaking event rivets the attention of the world. It is almost the only news story for days, destined to become the dominant news story for a very long time. The talk is all of retaliation. All analyses, all discussions center on what happened. Nowhere is there talk of why it happened beyond the superficial, although entirely accurate, assessments of the terrorists' evil fanaticism.... Condemned to Death for Blasphemy! Pakistan Revives the Barbarism of the Age of Inquisitions
Dr. Mohammed Younis Shaikh was condemned to death for blasphemy by a district court in Islamabad, Pakistan, on August 18. This British educated physician and founder of Pakistan's first rationalist organization, The Enlightenment, sits in a primitive death cell so small he can barely stand. His fate is reminiscent of the ferocity of medieval religious fanaticism. Hundreds of prisoners accused of blasphemy languish in these cells. Most are Muslims, some are Christians. Dr. Shaikh is nonreligious, apparently an atheist, interested only, judging by his record, in human rights, peace, and justice. All of these prisoners, like Dr. Shaikh, said something interpreted as disrespectful of Mohammed.   [08.23.01]
